Salim Javaid



SALIM JAVAID is a Czech-Pakistani saxophonist and improviser based in Cologne. They work in settings ranging playing contemporary music solo or in ensembles to performing improvised music and free jazz. Deeply connected with challenging contemporary saxophone literature, Salim has closely worked with Pierluigi Billone towards the premiere of “Misura. Obliquo” for saxophone solo as well as with Giorgio Netti on his cycle “necessità d’interrogare il cielo”.

In their solo work and compositions, Salim explores spatiality in music, the relation of acoustic events in time, and the flexibility of all parameters, while still pursuing a playful and improvisational attitude and treatment of the material. As a performer of contemporary music and founder of the Trio Abstrakt – an ensemble for contemporary music (saxophone, percussion, and piano) which is based in Cologne – they premiered a number of new works and are in the process of developing exciting new projects and concert formats.

They performed at the Biennale del Arte Venice, the Biennale for Contemporary Music in Bremen, Hellerau Festival / Dresdner Tage für zeitgenössische Musik, aDevantgarde Festival München, Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam and NOW! Festival / Philharmonie Essen, Mozartfest Würzburg, ZKM Karlsruhe, IAMIC summit 2022, IMD Darmstadt, Serious Series Berlin, Stadtgarten Köln and won first prizes at competitions Biberacher Jazzpreis 2018, Getxo International Jazz Contest 2017 and European Jazz Competition Burghausen 2016.

Salim studied classical and jazz saxophone at the HfMT Cologne as well as contemporary music at the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen.

As of 2023 Salim is teaching Music Theory at the ZZT / Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
